A barbecue full of solidarity
Francisco Lopez ·

"We've got a top-notch griller today, with all the kids", someone said with a laugh as the smoke rose from the grill. A group of friends and volunteers got together on a rooftop terrace to cook burgers — lots of them — with the sole idea that they'd later arrive warm at the merendero.
And that's exactly what happened: the same tray that came off the grill ended up inside, handed out one by one to the kids waiting at the table. Mariela, proudly wearing her Merendero El Retutu t-shirt, was one of the people who didn't stop turning the meat while everyone else put the sandwiches together.
It's these gestures — getting together for a while to cook for others — that keep the foundation's day-to-day going.
